***NOTE MAY 11, 2014: TOURIST VISAS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED IN LIBYA FOR THE TIME BEING. WE WILL POST WHEN THEY BECOME AVAILABLE ONCE AGAIN. THE WORD IS THAT THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE AGAIN AFTER ELECTIONS IN LIBYA, BUT THE ELECTION DATES HAVE NOT YET BEEN SET.***
The Ministry of Tourism in Tripoli, Libya has indeed begun to issue tourist visas once again! Currently the ONLY option is for pick-up upon arrival at the Tripoli Airport, and a private tour is required (including hotels, transportation, and a professional tour guide). Nationalities that seem to be able to acquire visas for travel to Libya (both for tourism AND business) are Europeans, South Americans, Australians, Russians, Japanese, New Zealanders, South Africans, Canadians, and Americans.
Due to the security situation, travel in and around Tripoli (with day trips to Sabratha or Leptis Magna) is only recommended/allowed at the moment. Ghadames is also a possibility, but tourists would need to travel there by a domestic flight, as the road there is still not safe for travel.
For those looking to travel overland from Tunisia to Egypt or vice versa, unfortunately that is still not possible.
Libya is still trying to get it’s feet back on the ground after the revolution, so please recognize that nothing is “set in stone” and the visa situation could always change at any moment.
We do have a service provider that is able to obtain business visas for travelers to Libya, but again, there are certain nationalities that are restricted, and you must be coming for business purposes.
The price involves our cost for the visa letter of invitation from a host company here in Tripoli, PLUS the additional cost to have the actual stamp placed in your passport at the Libyan Embassy of your choice outside the country. We are able to obtain letters of invitation for 1-month single entry visas as well as 3-month or 6-month multiple entry visas.
