Libya is quickly becoming a top tourist destination and offers holiday makers a wonderful warm climate, beautiful beaches, fantastic historical sites, spectacular hotels and a choice of superior shopping experiences.
Souks
Souks are a very popular shopping experience in Northern Africa and can be found in the Medina (the old town). The souks are traditional markets and are a hive of activity with an electrifying atmosphere and brightly colored stalls.
Visiting the Medina is an experience on its own with its amazing narrow passages, covered alleys and traditional architecture. The souks are placed along these narrow passages and sell a host of traditional items from jewelry and perfumes to leather goods, carpets, clothing and pottery.
This is the best place if you are looking to buy souvenirs for home or presents for loved ones. Don’t be surprised if some bartering takes place, so be ready, shopping at the souks are a fun and rewarding experience.
Main Street Shopping
In the major cities such a Benghazi and Tripoli, you will find the modern shopping experiences in the main shopping streets. A majority of these stores selling everything from clothing to household items and jewelry to accessories stay open offering late night shopping throughout the week.
It’s important to note that a majority of shops will close between 1.30pm and 4pm daily for lunch and then remain open later into the night.
Also bear in mind that you are on vacation in an Islamic country which means that shops close early on a Friday and remain closed until Saturday morning.
These shops offer everything you would find if you were to head to a major shopping street in a city near you. You can buy items to take home with you, gifts for family and friends and souvenirs to remind you of your Libyan vacation experience.
