The naming of the country was done by Greeks to symbolize the coastal area of North Africa that lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Nile River. The naming of the country was also done to designate the desolate tract behind the country. In ancient times, the whole area was sectioned into three divisions namely Cyrenaique, Tripolitaine, and Fezzan. Fezzan was actually a deserted part of this city.

Antiquity of Libya

In the 5th century, Libya was overwhelmed by an Egyptian named Ptolemme Vill along with his son, who returned the whole empire to the Roman Republic. At that time, the main religion preached by Libyans was Islam. An Arabian sovereign detained the territory in 7th century but the opulence and wealth of the country was shattered at that time due to the extreme climatic conditions. At last, Romans were driven out of the country. The entire country was turned into a deserted place due to the extreme weather conditions. After a long period of time, in the 14th century, it was overtaken by an Arabian who betrothed Libya to Tripolitania.

For centuries, the country remained under the rule of different territories which had a deep effect towards its ethnicity. To have the possession of this place, various countries indulged in war, which lead to more chaos and frenzied environmental conditions. The battle between the Italian army and the Ottoman Empire held in October 1911 is considered the worst clash in the history of Libya.

The boundaries of ancient Libya were not yet determined but Africa was considered a unique continent after Asia and Europe by the Greeks. The whole African continent was prominent and the natives in Libya separated into two parts, Libyans in the South and Libyans in the North.

Different Names of Libya

Libya was designated as Lubya in Arabic literature, which was a provisional part in the west region of Egypt. The name Libyes was acquired by Romans to indicate the desolated area of Egypt and Barca, while the rest of the province became popular by the name “Africa”. In Neo Punic captions, the word Lby was employed for representing the community of men and for women, the name that was designated came was Lbt. It is also supposed that the word Libya came from the ancient ethnic group Libu of Egypt. After that the same word appeared in Bible as Lubim for indicating the tribe populace and geographic province.

Libya is located on the borders of The Mediterranean Sea, between Tunisia and Egypt. It has countenanced the crucial invasions of various marauders of Rome, Italy, Turkey and the Arabs. Renowned for splendid olden times, this enthralling and gorgeous place has been wrestled over by various invaders to acquire the management. After a long period of slavery, Libya acquired sovereignty in the year 1951. All these invasions by different territories have made a deep impact on the civilization of Libya.

Ancient Libya is an existing witness of various civilizations from Neolithic ethnicity to Egyptian society, Carthaginian culture, Greeks, Romans and Muslims. The people of Ancient Libya were the intimates of the modern Berber people. Berber people were acknowledged as “Libyans” during Greek periods and their land was known as “Libya”.

When we talk of Libya, it is recognized as a land on the west of ancient Egypt that was a home for tribal people, generally known as the Libu and Tahu, to name a few. The 22nd and the 23rd dynasties of Egypt were ruled by the lords of Libyan culture that migrated to Egypt in the late period.

Ancient Libya and its Inhabitants

The Phoenicians, armies of Alexander the Great, Carthaginians and the Ptolemaic successors of Alexandra, along with the neighboring legislative bodies of the Byzantine Empire, ruled over the entire country of Libya. According to certain evidences, the coastal plains of Libya were populated with Neolithic people who were connoisseurs in the domestication of cattle and farming.

The original inhabitants of ancient Libya were Berbers and the derivation of this community is still a baffling question. The Berber languages that were spoken by the Berber people are in close relation to the languages that are currently spoken in Algeria and Morocco. This exploration has led to the profusion of educated conjecture with no explanation at all. Historical reflections have pointed to the foundation of Berbers in Southwestern Asia from which the associates of Berbers may have initiated their exodus into North Africa. There is still confusion regarding the fact as to whether the Egyptian name “Libu” was used for the Berber tribe or if it was used by the Berber people to refer to themselves. Not only this, modern Egypt has a part called Siwa Oasis where a language is still spoken that is close to Berber Siwi languages.

Origin of the Name “Libya”

Many Libyan tribes were brought up by the archeology of ancient Egyptians, out of which Tahu, Libu and Tjehenu, to name a few, were well known. It is believed that the name “Libya” originated from the ancient Egyptian tribe called “Libu” and afterwards this name was used in the Hebrew language, where it was written in the holy “Bible” as “Lehabim”. Presently the name “Libya” is mostly found in the Latin, Arabic and Greek languages.

With such great history and heritage, Libya stands as the prefect tourist attraction for vacationers with numerous places and venues to visit. Such tourist attractions reveal ancient Libya and the culture people followed since decades ago. Spending a holiday in Libya can be one of the most exciting experiences. So if you are planning to visit Libya, do not forget to bring your guide book so that you can enjoy sight seeing and also relish in the actual beauty of ancient Libya.

Libyans have been subjected to overseas regulations for a long period of time. The invaders were Italian, Arabian, Turkish, Romans and many more whose remnants can be found in different sections of Libya. The most overwhelming time period in Libyan history was the colonization of Italians which left such crucial effects on the natives of Libya that were not alleviated until recently.

History During the Second World War

During the Second World War, approximately half of the aboriginal populace of the country was banished or eliminated. During 1912, an Italian gaggle invaded the country and occupied Tripoli city. The clash between the two was unremitting until the Italian troops occupied management over most areas of Libya. At last in 1934, the Italian throng formally amalgamated Tripoli and Cyrenaica as an outpost of Libya.

Colonization by Italians

During the 1920’s and 30’s when Libya was overtaken by Italy, the entire country was turned into a desolate and uninhabited place and the idea of rejuvenating the kingdom was terrifying. To start a new stage, the administrative authorities took various crucial steps toward the progress of the state and spent large sums of money for the redevelopment of the country. Fascist chief Mussolini introduced a plan named Demographic Colonization and built roads, buildings and other new towns for the Italian colonizers.

The redevelopment efforts were crushed during the campaigning of North African troops and the economic situation of the state was devastated badly during 1942 and 1943. Cyrenaica had become a center of disorder and anarchy and the city turned out to be a frightened consign again. All the Italian colonizers were back.

At the end of 1945, Libya was impecunious and full of disorder. The economic circumstances of the kingdom were even worse. The state was partitioned into two provinces, Tripoli and Cyrenaica, both having different customs with dissimilar management, diverged economy and separate rules and regulations.

Sovereignty from foreign rule

During this time, Libya turned into a battleground for the campaigns of the Second World War. Libya was an Anglo French governed state. Various discussions were made among the big powers of world like Great Britain and the United States. A peace treaty was also suggested, but not harmonized, due to the fluctuations in the thoughts of different countries. At last, in 1949, the responsibility of authority was surrendered to The United Nations which pledged that Libya should be given independence. In January, 1951, different members of the UN Assembly voted for independence and freedom of the country and now Libya is a self-governing country.

A colonel named Muammar al Qaddafi, aged 27 years, modernized and transfigured the nation and established it as an anti-western and Islamic democracy with communal leanings. The constitution was made by the government and the discovery of oil in the country contributed a lot for the improvement and upgrading of the kingdom.

Today, with such great culture and history, Libya welcomes tourists from all around the world to experience this historic place.

Short description of past history

Present day Libya was previously known as Italian Libya and was established in 1934. It was actually an incorporated colony of North Africa. Basically, Libya is the amalgamation of two major colonies Tripolitania and Cyrenaica which were undertaken by the Ottoman Empire in 1912 after the Turkish war. In 1934, these two colonies were united in Italian Libya with Fezzan. Then with the assistance of British indulgence, Italian Libya expanded and became a division of British rule.

After tolerating an enduring period of loutish and coarse governments, at last January 1st, 1952 brought the instance when the Libyans took the breath of alleviation and formed a self governed management. Quaddafi, about 27 years of age, led the construction of the nation to a new arena and contributed a lot for the recreation of the country.

Modern Libya

After the independence of the province of Libya, various significant improvements have been demonstrated by the management of the nation. Women were endowed with their fundamental rights from which they were deprived of before the sovereignty; they have liberty to present their ideas before the public and they have also contributed to the jurisdiction section of the kingdom. Gone are the days when the women were considered as a thing to be decorated in the home. A revolution has been recognized in Libya.

Infrastructure of Present Libya

At present, Libya has been partitioned into three main sections, Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan in the south west. The city Tripolitania in turn is also divided into three precincts. Jifarah, including Tripoli city is situated at the south of the country and is entirely a desolated land and a very small populace resides there. The south section of Tripolitania (Jabal) is an arid place but also endorses some cultivated land. The Fezzan area is located at the south of Tripolitania and is a barren region with some strewed oasis.

The section that acquires most of the region of Libya is Cyrenaica and is comprised of the cities of Darnah and Behghazi. Going to the west region, Akhdar ends abruptly at the shores of Gulf Sidra and in the east area it contains the boundaries of Egypt. The south part of Akhdar is a vast area of sandy desert and also contains the major arid area of Libya.

Culture of Libyans

Approximately 95% of the populace contains the Arabian and Berbers while the other 5% of the population contains the tribal groups of Italians, Greeks, Egyptians, South Asians, Maltese and various others. The civilization of the nation is a wonderful blend of the traditions of different tribal communities. The major religious convictions preached by the people are of Islam and the greater part of the populace contains the Sunni Muslims. In Libya, all the legal conversation or legal documents are written in the Arabic language, but due to the impact of travelers visiting the nation, people there have also become familiar with English and Italian.

Economic Situation of the Country

A major part of the revenue of the kingdom comes from oil which has spurned the development of cities, transportation, and powered the armed services. Now with the efforts of management, the country has developed as a beautiful tourist place that is visited by innumerable vacationers from all over the world.
